Winter preparation does not have to begin with a shopping list. Start with a notebook. Knowing how your heating behaves makes it easier to explain a problem, review a change and order the part your installer actually needs.
Page one: record the starting point
Photograph your controls and note the heating schedule, boiler model and last service date. Write down which rooms feel comfortable and which take longer to warm up. Keep these observations separate from assumptions about the cause.
Page two: understand what you are adjusting
The room thermostat and the boiler’s radiator flow setting do different jobs. Flow temperature describes the water sent to the radiators. A lower setting can improve condensing-boiler efficiency, but it must still suit the heating system and keep the home comfortable.
On a combi boiler with separate heating and hot-water settings, follow the manual to identify the radiator control. Where a hot-water cylinder is involved, get advice before reducing a setting that also heats stored water. The Energy Saving Trust’s guide explains why system type matters.
Page three: make changes you can evaluate
If you adjust a setting, record the previous and new values. Make one change at a time and check comfort throughout the home. Note the weather and occupancy too: a lower bill alone does not prove that a particular adjustment caused the saving.
Page four: prepare an engineer’s brief
- Describe the symptom and when it occurs.
- List affected rooms and any displayed fault codes.
- Include recent work or changes to the controls.
- Bring the manual and service history.
- Ask what maintenance applies to the equipment already installed.

Only then, build the parts list
